Fisheries science is critical to climate and food security, yet most students never encounter it until late in their studies — if at all. This lack of early exposure makes it difficult to attract new talent, even though many scientists say they wish they had found the field sooner.
We spoke with teachers and professors to learn what excites Gen Z about careers, and found fisheries science aligns strongly with their values: climate impact, hands-on work, community connection, and stability. To reach students earlier, we built an outreach strategy with targeted lectures, a social media campaign, and physical collateral for classrooms and campuses.
CFRF is preparing to launch the initiative in Spring 2026 with a vetted list of schools and teachers to prioritize, a targeted social media campaign, and ready-to-use educational materials.
